Derek Preece is a Principal and Executive Consultant with BSM Consulting based in Orem, Utah. Mr. Preece consults with medical practices in the areas of strategic planning, cost containment, new business opportunities, referral networking, management techniques, mergers, acquisitions, private equity transactions, partnerships, physician relations and compensation, team building, financial controls, patient satisfaction, and employee motivation.

Mr. Preece specializes in providing consulting services for ophthalmologists, cosmetic and plastic surgeons, and dermatologists. His work encompasses private medical practices and academic sites, and he has provided sales development work and training for numerous medical device and pharmaceutical companies. He also works closely with the American Academy of Ophthalmology on its financial benchmarking and salary surveys.

Before joining BSM in 2007, Mr. Preece enjoyed 20 years as CEO of Enhancement Dynamics Inc., a medical practice management consulting company. He also has experience as a medical practice administrator and as a regional manager of an ambulatory surgery center company.

Mr. Preece is a frequent speaker at national and state medical conferences. His topics have included: “The Five-Step Leadership System,” “Strategic Planning for Practice Executives,” “Encourage Poor Performing Employees to Fire Themselves,” “Conquer Patient Flow Problems,” “The Essentials of Physician Compensation and Partnership Arrangements,” “How to Win Patients and Keep Them for Life,” “39 Ways to Raise Revenues and Cut Costs,” and “The ABCs of RVUs.”

Mr. Preece is also an active author of articles on human resources, management techniques, strategic planning, and financial management. He has written for publications such as EyeNet, Administrative Eyecare, and Executive Update. He co-authored the “Business of Ophthalmology” volume of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s book series “The Profession of Ophthalmology.”

Mr. Preece graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications and earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) with high honors from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
