VMG Health Day of Impact

ALIGNING CORE VALUES

As BSM Consulting and VMG Health have been focused on key components of integration these past several months, the alignment of our core values with those of VMG has propelled our progress toward becoming a powerful and cohesive team. At BSM and VMG, we believe that core values are more than just words. Core values are the foundation of our company and the guiding principles for everything we do. They shape our culture, purpose, and identity and keep our team focused when challenges arise. Articulating our core values allows our clients to discover this power for their own businesses, blending accountability, collaboration, and passion with integrity, quality, and responsiveness.

HISTORY OF DAY OF IMPACT

One of the ways we live out our core values is by giving back to our communities, and we had the opportunity to do that by participating in VMG Health’s annual Day of Impact. This year, on September 22nd, we had more than 200 employees volunteer at various local organizations, such as food banks, animal shelters, senior centers, and first responder agencies. Together, we donated nearly 800 hours of our time and skills to make a positive difference. We are proud of our team and are grateful for the opportunity to serve others.

According to Cyndy Carr, President and Chief Operating Officer at VMG Health, “This is my favorite VMG Health event because, in addition to doing something good for our community, we get an opportunity to work alongside colleagues that we may not see every day.”

BSM CREWS SERVING OUR COMMUNITIES

In Phoenix, Arizona, BSM team members volunteered at St. Mary’s Food Bank. We wanted to make a positive difference in our community and help those who are facing food insecurity. We sorted, packed, and organized over 1,400 boxes of food that will be distributed to those in need, particularly the senior citizens in our area. We also learned more about the challenges and opportunities of the food bank and how we can support them in the future. It was a rewarding and meaningful experience that brought us closer as a team.

In Reno, Nevada, BSM volunteers worked at the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and helped pack 8,500 lbs. of food for seniors. The teams there shared, “We are humbled by the incredible volunteer efforts put forth by our BSM Team across the U.S. Supporting our local communities continues to be a top priority and a rewarding experience for all involved.” Nevada employees also volunteered at the Nevada Humane Society, spending quality time with troubled cats, assisting as kennel ambassadors for shelter dogs, and providing administrative support.

Remote BSM workers throughout the country also found ways to give back to their communities:

  • Assembling and delivering essential supplies to local police officers in Utah.

  • Working with ECO: Weed Warriors to clear invasive plants so native plants and animals have space to thrive.

  • Making sandwiches to be distributed to the homeless in Seattle.

  • Cleaning up highways in Bozeman, Montana.

  • Picking up trash on Tahoe beaches with a junior volunteer.

  • Cleaning up a local park in Minden, Nevada.

THOUGHTS FROM BSM STAFF

Self-reflection is a valuable practice after engaging in any kind of social action. It helps us learn from our experiences and grow as individuals. Some of our BSM staff members shared their reflections on why they chose to volunteer and what they gained from their involvement in the Day of Impact:

Laurie Brown, Senior Consultant: I appreciated the opportunity to spend the day with colleagues I don’t see often enough while doing something good for the community.

Diedre Emerson, Operations Manager: I loved our Day of Impact! Everyone at St. Mary’s was super friendly and made it a great experience. They really have their system down and have some great music playing. Everyone was really enjoying themselves while also serving our community. I didn’t realize how many boxes we would be putting together; it really goes to show you just how many people need help! The boxes we put together for the day were specifically going to seniors in need. It was a great day, and I plan to go back and bring my son so we can continue giving to our community!

Brittney Irwin, Consultant: I was thoroughly impressed by the food bank facility’s size and the remarkable level of organization and friendliness exhibited by the staff. It was incredible to see everyone from BSM, as well as other groups of complete strangers, come together and work hard for one common goal. I was amazed at how many boxes of food we were able to produce in the short two-hour volunteer block.

Elizabeth Monroe, Senior Consultant: I had a wonderful time volunteering at the Day of Impact. It was amazing to see so many people come together to make a difference in our community. I also helped at the local food bank, where we sorted and packed donations for families in need. I learned a lot about the challenges and opportunities that exist in our area, and I felt inspired by the generosity and kindness of everyone involved. I plan to take my family back to volunteer.

IMPORTANCE OF GIVING BACK

Volunteering is a great way to make a positive impact in your community and in your organization. But did you know that it can also boost your employees' productivity and engagement? According to the social network, Communiteer, “Research has shown that there is a link between volunteerism and employee productivity. The feeling of making a difference in the world cultivates a sense of purpose that brings employees fulfillment, resulting in a higher level of commitment and workplace engagement.”  By encouraging your employees to volunteer, you show that you value their interests and how they align with your core values. This can lead to increased loyalty, engagement, and productivity among your employees. Volunteering is a win-win situation for the community, the employees, and the organization.

As Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”

We are grateful for the opportunity to gain so much more than we received during our 2023 VMG Health Day of Impact.
